May 12th, 2009: New Children’s Science Book on Weather to be Released – Contest Announced

A new children’s science book on weather is due to be released this November, written by WMUR TV-9 meteorologist Josh Judge and award-winning New Hampshire science teacher Kathe Cussen. The book, titled “Weather Facts and Fun,” will be geared to elementary school children and cater to the needs of New Hampshire schools. The publisher, SciArt Media of Greenfield, NH, is looking for entries of weather-related questions and art to be published in the book. NH children ages 7-10 and classes in the state (grades 2-6) are welcome to submit their entries for publication.

The book has been an idea that the New Hampshire-based meteorologist has been considering writing for years. When he asked SciArt Media about the idea of publishing such a book, owner James Maynard was quick to jump on the project.

“We’ve worked with Josh once before, when he wrote the foreword to ‘Black Ice’ on the New Hampshire ice storm. We are really looking forward to releasing this book, which combines Josh’s great knowledge of the weather with Kathe’s experience of teaching science to children in the Granite State.”

The publisher is also working closely with the state department of education, to make sure that the book covers every aspect of weather education that the state requires and recommends for children’s teaching needs on the subject.

There are two contests for the book, the first being “Just Ask Josh,” where parents and teachers can send in questions from their children and classes to be published in the book. The second contest, “Art for Ms. Cussen,” asks NH students to create original art on certain weather-related subjects, listed on the book’s home page. Winners get their names and hometowns published in the book along with their questions or pictures. School entries will also be credited to the teacher and school. In addition, one grand-prize winner in each contest will win a $25 gift certificate from SciArt Media for free books.

The book will be in full-color, and will be full of activities, thought experiments, and other active learning projects to make the book both fun and informative. It is meant not only as a textbook for schools, but also as a fun book for children and parents, for enjoyment and informal education.

“We found when we were first outlining the book that there is no one book that covers all of the requirements for weather education in this state, much less all of the state’s recommendations for effective weather education. This was a chance to really fill a market which had previously gone untapped,” explained Maynard.

The Monadnock-area publishing company has been known for filling markets in the state that other publishers ignore. In March, they released “Black Ice,” a book on the NH ice storm and blackout that affected hundreds of thousands of Granite-Staters.

The contests are free, and are open until Saturday, June 6th. More information on the book and contests may be found at: www.sciartmedia.com/weatherfactsandfun, or by calling: 603-397-0053.

July 19th, 2008: Carved in Granite is Released!

"Carved in Granite" Features New Hampshire Writers

(Temple, NH) - Saturday, a new collection of short stories from over a dozen New Hampshire writers was released. In addition to all being penned by New Hampshire authors, several stories also take place, at least in part, in the Granite State.

The group came together on the Internet, and were unknown to each other before they entered, and later won, a contest for New Hampshire writers held this Spring by SciArt Media of Temple. The anthology is entitled "Carved in Granite: Storytellers of New Hampshire," and the stories (in a variety of genres) are all previously unpublished.

Coffee Coaster Book Reviews is calling the collection as a whole “…first rate… the quality one expects if one were to… purchase a book of stories from one of your favorite international celebrity authors...” The contest, which originally drew over thirty authors presenting more than forty stories, was pared down to the final pick of fifteen stories from over a dozen authors around the state.

The stories include works of science fiction, fantasy, a retelling of a classic tale, stories of family dynamics and squabbles, looks at the inter-personal relationships between strangers, a dynamic fight for freedom against a government falling into tyranny and more. The stories seem to carry some common themes, however: they all live in the real world - where nothing is perfect, where struggle and hardship can be overcome, and only through that process can triumph be truly found. The other quality that ties the stories together is a New Hampshire flair, whether that shows through in the grumblings of a recent Massachusetts resident, now living in Chester, NH, at the transfer station, or the dynamics of the balance between security and liberty in a society at war.

"The idea, really, was to try to help the authors of New Hampshire by bringing them together in a collection such as this," explained New Hampshire native James Maynard, the owner of SciArt Media (and contributor to the collection). "My hope is that this project will help to highlight the writing talent that we have in this state which may go unnoticed by other publishers."

The authors come from Manchester and Bristol, Wilton, Epsom and Temple, Pelham, Lebanon and Derry, Londonderry, Chester, Raymond, Pelham and other parts of the state. Some are newcomers to writing, while others are already semi-professional writers.

The book went on sale online starting Saturday, July 19th, at: http://carvedingranite.sciartmedia.com. The collection will soon be available through large online retailers, as well as bookstores throughout the state. Book shows, signings, readings and more are planned in and around the author’s local communities, with more to follow. They will be announced on local and statewide event calendars and the SciArt Media website (www.sciartmedia.com). The company plans a similar collection (for holiday release) of original children's stories from Granite State authors.
